Web design encompasses many important aspects including your ability to accept credit card payment for your goods and services. You cannot accept credit card payments by simply asking your customers to e-mail their credit card details to you.
The reason for this is that e-mail is transmitted over the Internet and is open to prying eyes as it passes through numerous servers on the way to its destination. You may not know how to access and read other people's e-mails but there are people on the Internet with the means and the desire to steal such valuable information. Your customers want and deserve the security that is provided with secure online payments.
An important part of your website design and e-commerce application is to automatically process credit cards. If you wish to process credit cards online you will need a merchant account with your bank so funds can be directly credited to your business account when you make a sale.
To facilitate and integrate this type of automation into your website involves special coding.
You will need to talk to your website designer about integrating your e-commerce solution with your bank. Each bank will have their own procedures for transaction and will have differing specifications. Special code will be necessary, so your website can talk to your bank or to a bank approved aggregator (see what is an aggregator below) and issue the appropriate requests, checks and receive approvals for transactions. As previously mentioned you will need an SSL certificate if you are going to process credit cards online so the transactions remain secure.
